Compound Genetics

Compound Genetics has long been cranking out some of the best tasting cultivars I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing.

Compound Genetics is a cannabis breeding operation founded in 2017 by Christopher Lynch, a Portland-raised breeder whose relationship with the plant stretches back to his early cultivation years in Oregon and a formative stretch spent absorbing cannabis culture in Amsterdam.

What began as Tiger Trees, a smaller, more connoisseur-focused seed brand, evolved into Compound after Lynch recognized the need for a broader, more polished identity with wider market appeal.

In 2019, he relocated to San Francisco and partnered with Node Labs, giving him access to a full research facility and biotech infrastructure to expand his pheno-hunting operation at scale.

Lynch’s breeding philosophy is rooted in flavor and effect rather than numbers; by his own account, THC percentage never enters the equation. The focus is on stability, terpene expression, and the discovery of genuinely novel profiles through exhaustive selection.

That approach produced Legend Orange Apricot, the strain that first put Compound on the map, followed by a string of widely influential releases, including Jet Fuel Gelato, Apples and Bananas, and Pavé, the latter developed in collaboration with Berner of Cookies, whose co-sign helped push Compound from cult status to one of the most recognizable breeding names in the modern cannabis landscape.

Lynch has since moved on from Compound and now runs his own boutique brand, Cipher Genetics, for which his Blue Lobster genetics have become a hallmark.
