Terple: The King of Tangie-Candy Terpenes?

Tangie terps are among the most universally beloved aroma profiles and dominate recreational menus across the country through expressions like Tropicana Cookies, Blockberry, aka “Super Boof,” and today’s smoke, the tumultuously tantalizing Terple strain.

terple strain review

It’s those classic bright, sweet, Sunny D/orange Fanta and sweet vanilla notes that I get out of a good Tangie that I think keeps bringing me back to all of these different Tropicana Cookie crosses as they’re more common than simple, well-executed Tangie seems to be.

While Harry Palms Tropicanna Cookies (aka MTN Trop) is an official legend, having won multiple awards across multiple states, it is one of its progenitors, specifically Super Boof/Blockberry, that’s really garnered the most fame.

From the High Times Cup to the Emerald Cup to ultimately being named Leafly’s 2024 “Strain of the Year”, the Tropicana Cookies X Black Cherry Punch gains diehard fans wherever it is smoked.

That’s because Blockhead Buds double-downed on the sweet soda fruit flavor by crossing Trop Cookies with Black Cherry Punch, another old-school fan favorite renowned for its cherry soda sweetness.

The result was something that felt artificially sweet yet was completely organically occurring simply because of selective breeding.

So, while many an oldhead lament the loss of “true” OGs and landraces without incessant crossing, we would have never been blessed with the delightfully intriguing flavors of today.

This includes, perhaps, my favorite modern Tangie expression, which honestly doesn’t get as much hype as it deserves: the humble yet hilariously delicious Terple strain.

A cross of Tropicana Cookies (F2) and Slurricane #7, this cultivar refines the whole trop experience into the perhaps smoothest, glossiest candy fruit smoke experience you can have (within the Tangie spectrum).

terple cannabis strain

Appearance: Gator Don’t Play No Shit

Bag appeal might not be your thing, but in taking a holistic appreciation of the entire ritual of cannabis enjoyment, from jar opening to sparking up, to truly enjoy the culmination of all key experiential attributes.

Dark purples to seduce, deep jungle greens, and long orange locks to lust after, this Terple flower is definitely a stunner.

From the jagged and wild silhouette to the rather dense nature of the buds themselves to the bright orange stigma speaks to a flower that just yearns to be savored, a sweet delight to remember.

My jar had a mix of smaller to medium-sized buds, in the traditional trop shape of little middle fingers, perhaps a message to all other cultivars out there: “fuck you, we’re the best.”

Smell: Bath My Tender Body In It

As with fine coffee or aged bourbon, it is the nose that is perhaps discussed more than any other aspect of the experience, because it is the prelude, the hologram of the soon-to-come experience that your olfactory system translates into your brain as flavor.

Off the bat, Trop Cookies loud, proud Tangie terpenoids come screaming up my nostrils like a hype crew before a main event, the Cipha Sounds to Chappele’s Show.

The Slurricane pheno brings a super rad dimension to the smell session with its own Dosidos and Purple Punch background.

terple weed

Just like with Blockberry/Super Boof, the Purple Punch brings a grape Airheads taffy stickiness to the nose, but what makes Terple stand out is the Kush background from the Dosido parents.

While really good Super Boof smells almost entirely synthetic at times, like some kind of attention-grabbing designer perfume, this Terple offers a wider range of fruit notes, with a little extra kick to increase its nasal viscosity.

If Super Boof is a sparkling rose, then Terple is more of a dessert Lambrusco, packing a slightly denser punch and lingering just a bit longer, while perhaps not hitting all the high notes of the Boof.

Smelling Terple next to Blockberry/Super Boof next to Tropicana Cookies next to Tangie would be a tasting experience of my dreams, but I’ll conclude here by simply saying if you’re a fan of these terpene profiles, then smelling Terple will be like seeing an old friend after far too long.

Sensation: Progressive Electronic Chillness

Terple is just as euphoric as Blockberry and Trop Cookies, but with a more base- and mid-heavy experience compared to the rather sparkly Super Boof or the baked treats of Trop Cookies.

So yeah, on the scale of fruity hybrids, this is on the brighter, more energizing side. It makes me want to pontificate about the universe, cook a killer bowl of pasta, or just immerse my consciousness in some J Ribbon.

Terple is one of my buddy’s favorite strains, and as such, I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying this herb on multiple occasions over the years. Its motivating effects are consistent every time.

It’s not quite as bright or sparkly as, say, a Strawberry Fizz, nor does it slap you awake like a good Durban Poison, but it fuels your inner fire like the impact of, well, a bit of a sugar rush.

That’s not saying it’s jittery or particularly short-lived, it’s just to say Terple is a definite “upper” for me, not a sleepy time kind of smoke.

Dosidos are such fantastic genetics, and I think, married with the GSC from the Tropicana Cookies side, they really harmonize well in Terple, reinforcing some of the funnest aspects of the trop line.

Focus North Gardens here in Oregon grew the fuck out of this Terple, and I hope they keep it in their rotation forever because it never disappoints.
