It’s that time of year again, when we all take a look back at the last 365ish days and reflect on the good and bad, but ideally more of the former.
It should come as no surprise then that giant cannabis marketplace and discovery engine Leafly has once again announced their “Strain of the Year” award, for the year of 2024.
What is their most popular strain of 2024 then?
In this review we explore:
Well, if you’re active in the recreational market it should come as little surprise that it is none other than the Super Boof strain from Blockhead Buds out of Sand Diego, CA!
Heck, when I did my analysis last year of the most searched for strains in every state at the end of 2023, Super Boof was already being searched for on Google like mad in Colorado AND Oregon, with sibling-strain Blockberry being fastest rising in the Illinois market.
So, Super Boof’s Leafly award comes as no surprise to all you CO, OR, and IL readers.

But back to Super Boof. What makes this strain so special? Where did it come from?

Who is Blockhead Buds?
Before there was Super Boof there was Blockberry, itself a Tropicana Cookies and Black Cherry Punch cross.
Super Boof is a phenotype of the original Blockberry, which was popular long before the term “Super Boof” reached the hype-market vernacular.
Having smoked both I’d say Super Boof is a bit heavier on the Tangie, and slightly sweeter on the palate, like powdered sugar sweet compared to Blockberry which I thought expressed the Black Cherry Punch more noticeably than what I find in the Boof pheno.
Why is Super Boof so popular?
In short, because of its decadent cherry and tangie candy nature.
Fruity/candy strains will always be popular because human beings love sweet things and having candy-like cannabis is a luxury many of us never had during “legacy market” days.
Why Super Boof was selected by Leafly specifically boils down to it A) being on more dispensary menus nationwide than any other new strain in 2024 and B) it being recommended the most frequently in Leafly’s Budtender’s Choice Survey.
Super Boof is popular with customers (hence the widespread menu domination) and popular with budtenders (people who smoke a lot and have broad palates), all of which are a reflection of its approachable terpene profile and light, chill, effects.
I think the light buzzy high that Super Boof imparts actually contributes substantially to its popularity.
Super Boof’s light-hearted and playful effects lend itself well to going out, socializing, playing video games, and just having fun.
This stands in contrast to some more sedative or focus-oriented genetics out there.
3 Strains Similar to Super Boof
In case you can’t find Super Boof at your local dispensary OR you’ve already smoked it and are looking for similar experiences then I’ve got some personal recommendations for you!
Being a huge fan of Tropicana Cookies myself I suggest that if you’ve enjoyed Super Boof but have not yet tried its legendary parents, then you owe it to yourself to give them a go.
Tropicana Cookies is already a modern classic in its own right but Black Cherry Punch can also be quite enjoyable.
Just a word of caution, I’ve found it more challenging to find real cherry-heavy BCP vs great Trop Cookies, which seems to be everywhere these days.
After you’ve paid your respect to Super Boof’s foremothers then you might want to consider checking out Trop Cherry Fritter (Cherry Pie x Apple Fritter), Honeymoon Crasher (Tropicana Cookies x Wedding Crasher), and Trop Fire Breath (Secret Tang Breath x Coolie High).
Trop Cherry Fritter Strain

Trop Cherry Fritter is an equally sweet strain that perfectly marries that red candy cherry profile with buttery/pastry characteristics Apple Fritter. High Noon Cult does this strain well.
Honeymoon Crasher Strain

Honeymoon Crasher on the other hand retains the prototypical Tropicana Cookies hallmarks while imparting some more Purple Punch notes from its Wedding Crasher parent, resulting in a strain similar to Super Boof but instead of Black Cherry boosting the Trop Cookies profile it’s the cake-y purple punch coming through from Wedding Crasher.
Focus North is the farm you want if looking to crash a honeymoon.
Trop Fire Breath Strain

Trop Fire Breath was a big surprise for me with how much Tangie was expressed despite not having either Tangie or Trop Cookies as a direct parent.
Stardust Cultivation has done some really clever breeding to develop a strain that somehow takes Tangie to the next level via quite selective crossing of Secret Tang Breath and lesser-known Coolie High.
The world of Trop strains is a large one though so I’m curious, what are YOUR favorite Trop/Tangie-heavy strains?
